Nevada legalized adult-use cannabis in 2017, but the law only permits consumption on private property with the owner's permission. Since almost every square foot of the Strip is either public space or a hotel-casino that bans smoking cannabis, the only reliably legal option for a visitor is a state-licensed consumption lounge.

Nevada is one of the few states with a licensed cannabis lounge framework. In a licensed lounge you can legally consume on site — smoke, vape, dab or eat — as an adult 21+. Some are attached to a dispensary (you buy and consume in the same building), others are independent and let you bring your own.

Where you cannot smoke in Las Vegas
- The Strip and any sidewalk, street or park. Public consumption is illegal in Nevada and actively enforced on the Strip. You can drink a beer walking down Las Vegas Boulevard; you cannot smoke a joint next to it.
- Casino floors. Casinos hold gaming licenses regulated federally in effect through banking and compliance pressure, so essentially every property bans cannabis outright — even in tobacco smoking areas.
- Hotel rooms and balconies. Almost every major hotel prohibits cannabis smoking and charges a cleaning fee (commonly $200–$500) if they detect it. A "smoking room" means tobacco unless the property says otherwise in writing.
- Your rental car, rideshare or any vehicle. Consuming in a vehicle is illegal for both driver and passengers, parked or moving.
- Dispensary parking lots. A common and expensive mistake — this is still public consumption.
What it costs if you get caught
Public consumption in Nevada is a misdemeanor, generally carrying a fine up to $600. Driving under the influence of cannabis is treated like alcohol DUI, with far more serious consequences. Add hotel cleaning fees on top, and one careless session can cost more than the whole trip's cannabis budget.
Smart options if you're not going to a lounge
- Edibles and low-odor vapes in a private space you control — a cannabis-friendly rental, not a hotel room that bans it.
- Book a cannabis-friendly stay. A small number of rentals and boutique properties explicitly allow consumption — check our Las Vegas directory and always confirm the policy with the host before booking.
- Guided cannabis tours and party buses licensed for consumption — check the operator's license, not just their marketing.
Rules to travel by
- You must be 21+ with valid government ID.
- Purchase limits are 1 ounce of flower or 1/8 ounce of concentrate per transaction.
- Cannabis must stay in Nevada — crossing state lines or flying with it is a federal offense, and that includes leaving it in your bag at Harry Reid airport.
- Buy only from licensed dispensaries. Street purchases carry criminal risk and unknown product.
